            <lg>
               <l>First we had a single room,</l>
               <l>John and I.</l>
               <l>Fifteen other roomers there:</l>
               <l>Dingy halls and meagre fare,</l>
               <l>Strife and gossip everywhere,</l>
               <l>But within our single room,</l>
               <l>John and I, a bride and groom,</l>
               <l>Felt that life was fair.</l>
            </lg>

            <lg>
               <l>Then we had a Harlem flat,</l>
               <l>John and I,</l>
               <l>Odorous rooms, a stifling air,</l>
               <l>Noise and dirt seemed everywhere,</l>
               <l>But friendly faces too were there,</l>
               <l>And youth and love and fun to spare,</l>
               <l>And so within our Harlem flat,</l>
               <l>John and I would play and chat,</l>
               <l>With not a single care.</l>
            </lg>

            <lg>
               <l>Next a swell apartment home,</l>
               <l>John and I,</l>
               <l>Far from restless city’s roar,</l>
               <l>Elevator, boy at door,</l>
               <l>Shining oak and polished floor,</l>
               <l>Dresses, parties, friends galore,</l>
               <l>Women by the day to chore,</l>
               <l>And within our home so smart,</l>
               <l>John and I—somewhat apart,</l>
               <l>Hungered yet for more.</l>
            </lg>

            <lg>
               <l>So a duplex studio,</l>
               <l>John and I,</l>
               <l>Rugs and pictures, music, books,</l>
               <l>Hangings rare oer shady nooks,</l>
               <l>Seances with frauds and spooks,</l>
               <l>Japs instead of Irish cooks,</l>
               <l>At our door a car de luxe</l>
               <l>And within that studio,</l>
               <l>John and I, good friends you know,</l>
               <l>Lived for coin and looks.</l>
            </lg>

            <lg>
               <l>Then we took a ten roomed suite,</l>
               <l>John and I,</l>
               <l>In a vast and grand hotel,</l>
               <l>Where the very rich do dwell</l>
               <l>All went slick and smooth and swell,</l>
               <l>In the lap of luxury we fell,</l>
               <l>A gilded life, so sleek and well,</l>
               <l>Till John met her. I dare not tell—</l>
               <l>I dare not think of what befell.</l>
               <l>And within that 10 roomed suite,</l>
               <l>John and I did rarely meet,</l>
               <l>Life, to me, was hell.</l>
            </lg>

            <lg>
               <l>Last, a mansion, bleak and fair,</l>
               <l>John and I!</l>
               <l>Built of marble, stone and rock,</l>
               <l>Occupying half a block,</l>
               <l>Iron grill, electric lock,</l>
               <l>Fronting the great River Drive,</l>
               <l>From my room I watched the hive,</l>
               <l>Of common folk go drifting by,</l>
               <l>In splendid isolation I,</l>
               <l>Implored of God the reason why,</l>
               <l>That happiness had passed me by,</l>
               <l>And within our mansion fair,</l>
               <l>I alone—John never there,</l>
               <l>Prayed that I might die.</l>
