                     Humanities Hub at University of British Columbia. She is the author of the
                     award-winning monograph <title level="m"><ref target="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/making-noise-making-news-9780190634506">Making Noise, Making News: Suffrage Print Culture and US
                        Modernism</ref></title> (Oxford UP) and of numerous articles about American
                     literature and women writers. She has also edited <ref target="https://www.mqup.ca/becoming-sui-sin-far-products-9780773547223.php"><title level="m">Becoming Sui Sin Far: Early Fiction, Journalism and
                           Travel Writing by Edith Maude Eaton</title></ref> (McGill-Queen’s UP) and
                     published essays on the Eaton sisters in <title level="j">American
                        Quarterly</title>, <title level="j">MELUS</title>, <title level="j">Legacy</title>, <title level="j">Canadian Literature</title>, and <title level="j">American Periodicals</title>. Her current research project is a

                     were focused towards digital humanities and Indigenous literatures. During his
                     time with the project, he contributed mainly as a transcriber and encoder for
                     several of Eaton’s works. He is currently working with the International
                     Society of Cell and Gene Therapy as Coordinator, Training and
                  Education.</p></note>

               <l>Fifteen other roomers there:</l>
               <l>Dingy halls and meagre fare,</l>
               <l>Strife and gossip everywhere,</l>
               <l>But within our single room,</l>
               <l>John and I, a bride and groom,</l>
               <l>Felt that life was fair.</l>

               <l>Then we had a Harlem flat,</l>
               <l>John and I,</l>
               <l>Odorous rooms, a stifling air,</l>
               <l>Noise and dirt seemed everywhere,</l>
               <l>But friendly faces too were there,</l>
               <l>And youth and love and fun to spare,</l>
               <l>And so within our Harlem flat,</l>
               <l>John and I would play and chat,</l>
               <l>With not a single care.</l>

               <l>And within our home so smart,</l>
               <l>John and I—somewhat apart,</l>
               <l>Hungered yet for more.</l>

               <l>Hangings rare oer shady nooks,</l>

               <l>At our door a car de luxe</l>
               <l>And within that studio,</l>
               <l>John and I, good friends you know,</l>
               <l>Lived for coin and looks.</l>

               <l>In a vast and grand hotel,</l>
               <l>Where the very rich do dwell</l>
               <l>All went slick and smooth and swell,</l>
               <l>In the lap of luxury we fell,</l>
               <l>A gilded life, so sleek and well,</l>
               <l>Till John met her. I dare not tell—</l>
               <l>I dare not think of what befell.</l>
               <l>And within that 10 roomed suite,</l>
               <l>John and I did rarely meet,</l>
               <l>Life, to me, was hell.</l>

               <l>Occupying half a block,</l>

               <l>From my room I watched the hive,</l>
               <l>Of common folk go drifting by,</l>
               <l>In splendid isolation I,</l>
               <l>Implored of God the reason why,</l>
               <l>That happiness had passed me by,</l>
               <l>And within our mansion fair,</l>
               <l>I alone—John never there,</l>
               <l>Prayed that I might die.</l>
